‘No friendship is an accident’ wrote American author O. Henry, and never was this more true than the friendship Rob and I forged with Anna and Matt from a chance meeting in the gym in Trestina. These beautiful humans came into our lives five years ago and became ready comrades on the challenging path of learning and living abroad. They came at the perfect moment. These are friends who we respected and were inspired by from the start, whose values of kindness, generosity, compassion towards others, grace with themselves, tender patience with their kids, we desired to be around, to mimic. If good friends are hard to find then good spiritual friends, for those like us who seek them, are rare gems indeed. Yes, I love our shared passions for cooking, for eating, for making healthy tinctures from nature, for hugging, for cheering on our kids, for convivial gatherings, and trying out new places, but what we most loved, and will continue to love from afar, is your spiritual warmth and openness. It is a privilege and a blessing to have friends with whom we can be totally ourselves, where words like soul, spirit, faith and consciousness can be easily exchanged. Anna, Matt, Oliver and Sofia: we are so grateful you came into our lives and while we viscerally mourn your departure and distance, we cannot wait to see the flourishing of your next life chapter in your homeland. Here’s to nuts and seeds, always carrying a pocket knife, and future adventures together in Steamboat. 🥰
As a person who has been hard wired, double dipped, and triply conditioned, in the gnawing belief that my value is inextricably connected to that which I achieve, my resistance to stopping, being ill, going slow these past weeks, has been a real challenge. This autumn to winter, like every year, is a central piece in my learning to listen to my soul. Rather than ‘doing rest’, finding utility in making healthy dishes and taking extra time to use self care products, something more is being called for. How would it be to have no utility, no point, no achievements for a while? In Daoist speak, could I trust in the true nature of things? No meddling, no over effort-ing.
Wintering has come early for us. It has come like a burly enforcement officer threatening at our threshold; it will brook no excuses, and will wrestle us to the floor, pinning us down until we fully submit. We must succumb. Following a relentless and much loved period of busyness, rich with guests, and visitors, to-do lists, and spreadsheets, packed with hurrying from place to place and squeezing in one last chore on route to do something else, life stepped in and waved a big red flag. 🚩 It has become clear that our bodies and the universe… they are in cahoots. They have told us in no uncertain terms that a new season is upon us, there’s a new sheriff in town. We are now to move into the graceful and respectful season of winter. In accordance with the ancient rhythms of nature, this a period of looking inward, slowing down, maximizing food supplies, repairing and rejuvenating. For best results, I am leaning into some new habits that invite me to take time over daily tasks, encouraging me to savour each action and each moment, and take just that little bit more care of myself. So far this has looked like large hot mugs of lemon and honey, flickering candles on random surfaces, sitting down while I chop large quantities of fruit and vegetables, (why don’t I do this more often?), making dishes that require slow cooking, slow eating, lots of hand cream, and time deliberately set aside for the earnest stroking of cats, dog and donkeys. “Winter is not the death of the life cycle, but its crucible”, writes Katherine May in her beautiful book ‘Wintering’. Thank you @nicole_croft I took your advice and poured love into very very slowly making a ribollita following Anna Jones’ recipe. It was the perfect meditative cooking experience for my needs which will no doubt be repeated. 🙏

The last crate of olives for harvest 2024 is finally picked and pressed. 1783kg of olives later, 230 liters of pure goldy green oil to bathe in, and the highest percentage yield at 12.6% of any other producer at the press… we are feeling very grateful to all those who pitched in, and a teeny bit proud. Why Palare olives reached such a high yield we can only hazard a guess: two contributing factors could be our altitude which often means the trees are above the fog and in the sun longer than our valley neighbours and, the reason I’m most backing, the magic power of seasoned donkey and pony poo! It’s like unicorn 🦄 poo just a bit more brown 🤎. Thank you to Angelo, Antea, Tita, Mohammad, Fjori, Amanda, Tony, Richard, Thomas, Andreas, Anna, Matt, Maebel, Fred, Chiara, and Lola for lending their hands to this most memorable of harvests. Also thank you to @igirasoli_cantina @pilarfogliati and @andreapilar_artigianidelvino for their long hours and hard work at the frantoio. 🫒💚🙏

And we are off to a roaring start as the 2024 olive harvest gets underway; this year’s bumper crop looks to be characterised by a touch of the eau de dog about it. We seem to have had as many canine helpers as humans, some rolling among the olives more than others. This season’s new apprentices include Amanda and Tony who helped harvest our biggest haul yet from one tree… 4 crates or around 80 kilos. And a charming British lady from central London found herself teaching the ropes of an Umbrian olive harvest to a nice young man from Equador! Numbers so far: 14 of 80 trees; 750 kg of olives; 90 liters of oil; 12% yield 🤩 May the force be with us and all those harvesting during this beautiful sunny autumn.
